SATS Triage

SOUTH AFRICAN TRIAGE SCALE (SATS)

SATS is a triage model developed by doctors, nurses and ambulance workers in the organization Cape Triage Group - now South African Triage Group (SATG) - in South Africa in 2006. SATG is part of the Emergency Medicine Society of South Africa (EMSSA). SATS is a step-by-step triage model with five degrees of urgency and consists of a discriminator list (symptoms/conditions), TEWS (Triage Early Warning Score); a systematic assessment and scoring of vital parameters, damage and mobility, as well as the ability to upgrade the degree of urgency by using clinical judgment (Senior Healthcare Professional's Discretion). South African SATS consists of two versions; one for adults and children over 13 and one for children under 13 years of age. The children's version has two TEWS tables; one for children under 3 years and one for children between 3 and 12 years. For more information, see EMSSA - SATS
